Wafuku is traditional Japanese-style clothing. Japanese clothing consisted entirely of wafuku until the 1850s, when Western-style clothing (called 洋服, youfuku, in Japan) was introduced. Despite efforts toward adoption of Western clothing, most Japanese still wore wafuku for about a century. In the past few decades, wafuku usage has decreased greatly, but it lives on, especially in special occasions such as certain ceremonies.
