The closing chapter of a very strong story is delivered through masterful verbal, sound, and visual storytelling. One of the few anime to lift the bar higher than their previous season, and a deserved spot amongst top anime.
In the second season, shogi is more like a secondary plot line, while the main topic is the development of a person's character at different stages in life - through adversity and perseverance, pain and love, effort and faith.
The main takeaway for me is the believable characters and the empathy that I feel for them and their experiences throughout the anime.
A must see vibrant experience for every anime fan.

Different interests (koto vs shougi) but the same struggle to get to the top and similiar portrayal of harsh competetive world and difficult interpersonal situations, envy and hatred included. Believable and relatable backstories brings together a mixture of drama, humour, dark themes and touching moments.

This, along with season 1, bears one of the marks of a truly great story: for better or for worse, you genuinely care about the characters. Even if you know nothing about shogi, the depth of feeling in their struggles reaches you. Now, on top of that, layer some of Shaft's best audiovisual work and outstanding acting. What you get is a show that is all heart and soul. A masterpiece.

Even if you don't like shogi or sports in general, I still recommend you to watch this series, because it uses shogi as a means to portray the struggles of the characters.
Sangatsu no Lion is one of those heart-warming series that leave a lasting impression on you.

S1 primarily focused on Shogi with a nice blend non-Shogi events; however S2 mixes it up and focuses more on non-Shogi events and less on Shogi. While S2 was good, I wish more focus was on Shogi. Still, this anime remains relaxing and all the characters are enjoyable. Hopefully, there is another season down the road as I'd like to continue watching everyone try to fulfill their aspirations.

The story is a lot less about Shogi compare to season 1, and character development is a lot deeper on each surrounding characters. If you like the season 1 or movie, this is definitely a must see.

I was excited to watch this season because I kind of liked the first one and it may end up being one of my top ten anime. I started watching bits and pieces of this one and boy, was I disappointed. I watched up to episode 5 and then kind of just wanted to give up, especially after hearing about how dramatic this season gets. Okay, here comes my problems with this season.
They shifted the focus of Rei's point of view to Hina's. A lot of the season starts focusing on Hina and her reactions to the conflicts she encounters rather than Rei's. She encounters bullying during her third year of middle school and being the sweetheart she is, protects a girl named Chiho from it, who is like an acquaintance to her. But then the bullies start bullying her. Between her classmates bullying her and her friend moving away, Hina becomes depressed and solemn. This was inconsistent to the cheerful, easy-going, bubbly girl she was in the first season. It's like the writer ran out of ideas and started to make Hina's character similar to Rei's. She starts crying excessively, she has no friends, she is going through the trauma of bullying which is what Rei's character has been through. In episode 4, she cries even during moments that weren't even requiring that sort of drama such as the ladybug scene.
They changed the tone of the Kawamoto family. In the 1st season, the Kawamoto family was supposed to represent the light-hearted, comedic part of the series and contrast with the dark, gloomy moments of Rei. Now it seems like the Kawamoto family has become more melodramatic and dark like that of Rei's. I haven't seen enough to know if Rei's life starts becoming more comedic and light-hearted, what I do know is that he is recovering from his depression.
